Applying for a Home
Choosing your new home is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. At the Berwickshire Housing Association we use a system know as “Choice based allocations” What we mean by this is that, instead of operating a traditional waiting list system like many other housing providers, we advertise all our properties, and only consider the people that respond to our adverts for those properties.
So, if you see something advertised that you like, tell us, and we’ll consider you for that property. If there are properties that you don’t like, don’t apply, and we won’t consider you for them – it’s as simple as that! You decide what meets your needs, whether or not you apply, or whether or not you can wait for something else to come along.
Before you can start applying for homes you first have to register with us. You can register by filling in a registration form obtainable from any of our local housing offices or by filling in your details online on the homehunt website (www.homehunt.info).
Once registered you can apply for any property that is advertised (as long as the property is suitable - e.g. it would not result in overcrowding, or there are no restrictions on who can apply stated in the advertisement - for example, sheltered housing is normally reserved for those of retirement age and above).
Details of the houses we have available appear weekly in The Berwickshire News and Berwick Advertiser, as well as in our housing offices. You can also visit the homehunt website or listen to recorded information about our available properties on 0800 587 4868 (free phone number).
When you see an advert for a property you are interested in, you should apply for it by telling us your registration number and the property's address. You can do this in person at any of our local offices, by phone, by post, or online - but you must do this before the closing date and time specified in the advert. If you have a Priority Pass, it will be recognised automatically.
You can apply for as many advertised properties as you wish at any one time. However, if you qualify for more than one offer at the same time, we will assume that the property you apply for first is your first choice, and so on, in the order you chose to apply. If you qualify for an offer on one house, we will disregard any later applications you have made, so the order in which you apply could be very important to you.
